Registration under way for Babe Ruth baseball

Staff writer

Bremerton’s Babe Ruth Baseball League, which is available to area kids ages 13 to 15, is holding registration for the upcoming season.

The Babe Ruth league has existed in Bremerton since 1955, but president Phil Kight said the chartered organization is in a state of flux.

“We’re trying to keep this thing going,” Kight said of the league, which needs enough players to yield four teams in each age division to be considered an independent league.

If it fails to reach that mark — there is a 13-year-old division and a 14-15-year-old division — the league will be forced to obtain a waiver from the league commissioner that would allow Bremerton teams to compete against teams from other areas.

“We’re trying to get more parent involvement,” said league vice president Janet Kight, who has served in that position for two years. “We don’t want to let these kids down, we’re not going to give up on this league.”

But in order for Bremerton to have its own league, more kids need to sign up.

The league will hold registration every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. through March 8 at Bremerton Legion Field.

“We want to call ourselves a league and do it on our own,” Janet said. “Our goal is to not give up.”

Any child between the ages of 13 and 15 interested in playing baseball is encouraged to sign up, she said.

Bremerton Legion Field is located at the intersection of Sheridan and Spruce on the east side of the Warren Avenue Bridge. For more information, call Phil or Janet Kight at (360) 792-0557.
