Whaling Days set to be a hot, fun, family- friendly good time
Silverdale’s Whaling Days is all about family fun in the summer sun, and Barry Iles wouldn’t have it any other way.
Iles is a veteran of all 35 Whaling Days — save one when he was in Europe.
As the president of the event’s host civic club, the Silverdale Rotary, he yearns to see the streets flooded with families partaking in the festivities and fun.
“Bring your family down,” he said. “It’s a family-friendly festival.”
A street fair, entertainment suitable for all ages and athletic events — the Whale of a Run and the Tour de Kitsap — offer a draw for one and all, he said. The fun starts on Friday night, with a fireworks spectacular taking to the skies at 10 p.m., Iles said. This year, the fireworks show will be set to music — a first for Whaling Days.
Music on the main stage starts rocking at 6 p.m. July 24 when local three-piece Tres Hombres, pays tribute to ZZ Top. From that point, a flood of tunes will rock the weekend away, including homegrown talents Rewind (3:45-4:30 p.m. July 25) and Bremerton resident and MxPx frontman Mike Herrera’s Tumbledown, which will play from 4:45-5:45 p.m. July 25.
For the younger set, the annual Silverdale Dandy Lions Grand Parade begins at 10 a.m. July 25.
Kids also can enjoy a continuous sugar buzz throughout the weekend with street-fair goodies like elephant ears and frozen lemonade.
The weekend wraps up with the Great Kitsap Duck Race, during which thousands of rubber duckies race at a slighter faster-than-snail pace in Dyes Inlet.
Rotarians sell the ducks in the months leading up to Whaling Days, offering community members a chance to win cool prizes when their ducks bobble to the finish line.
The top prize in the duck race is either a Nissan truck or a cash prize of $16,000.
And while the barometer is expected to push slightly over the comfortable mark — the weekend forecast projects temperatures near the 90-degree mark — Iles said that’s part of Whaling Days’ charm.
“God smiles on Whaling Days,” he said.
