Casting begins for Lone Sailor memorial
 - Jul 04 2008, 10:25 AM Thanks to the generosity of the community, the “Lone Sailor” US Navy Memorial is now in the casting process, bound for a permanent home on the Bremerton waterfront.

The Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council of the Navy League of the United States, in making this announcement, indicated that they had reached the mid-point in raising funds to complete the exciting project.

The sculptor, Stanley Bleifeld of Connecticut, will supervise the casting of the seven-foot bronze statue at the Polich Tallix foundry in upstate New York. The foundry master indicated that his fine art foundry is the only one in United States with a metallurgist on staff. He caters to museums, private collectors and outdoor sculpture gardens and has expertise in rigging work for safe transport across the United States.

Oly steals one on the diamond against Knights
Jul 04 2008, 12:25 PM Bremerton’s baseball team dropped a heartbreaker Wednesday, falling 4-3 in a rescheduled game against Olympic. The Knights held Olympic scoreless for six innings, taking a 3-0 lead into the top of the seventh, but senior Eli Olson couldn’t get the final three outs in relief. Trojan Elliot Thorsen hit the game-winner with two outs and his team down 3-2 in the seventh. BHS (2-8 overall, 2-5 league) scored each of its three runs in the bottom of the third.

The Knights visited Klahowya Thursday, but results were not available at press time. The team will host Sequim Monday at Legion Field. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
