Ten to 15 brass headstone plates, which marked the graves of military veterans at Evergreen Cemetery in Poulsbo, were reported stolen on Friday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day.

According to Kitsap County Sheriff's deputies who are leading the investigation, the headstone markers appeared to have been pried off with a bar from their cement pedestals. In some cases, prying the plates also damaged the pedestal bases of the graves.

Investigators are calling the crime theft and desecration.

The crime was initially reported by a community homeowner's association president who noticed the stolen markers and called Kitsap County 9-1-1. The association president is in the process of checking records to find next of kin to those veterans interred at the cemetery to notify them of the theft.

Deputies were unsure if the theft was malicious in nature due to the occurrence on Veterans' Day.

The Sheriff's department urged anyone with information concerning this crime, or those dealing with recoiling of metals in the greater Puget Sound region to keep an out for these brass plate.

Report any information to Kitsap County Central Communications at360-308-5400.
