Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews got called out to a brush fire near the Highway 303 and Highway 3 interchange at about 8:23 p.m. Sunday night.
After about two hours, crews contained the blaze to an area of approximately 100 feet by 200 feet in light to moderate brush. Firemen continued to work on flare ups into the night and the county fire marshal responded Monday morning to determine the cause of the fire.
The fire occurred between Highway 3 and the Clear Creek Trail, just North of Highway 303. Access to the fire was difficult and the fire was fanned by 10-15 mile per hour winds.
Washington State Patrol shut down two lanes of the northbound Highway 3 on-ramp from 303, but one lane remained open.
CKFR sent multiple units to the fire and crews from Navy Region Northwest also responded to assist them.
“Please remember that Kitsap County is currently under a Phase 1 Burn Ban and all outdoor burning is suspended at this time,” said Ileana LiMarzi, a CKFR spokesperson. “Conditions are extremely dry in our area and something as small as a cigarette butt tossed from a car window can result in a major brush fire.”
