Kitsap Humane Society rescues 46 cats from hoarder

March 7, 2013 · 3:29 PM

Kitsap Humane Society’s Animal Rescue and Enforcement (KARE) said Thursday that it rescued 46 cats and kittens from a couple that were hoarding them in a camping trailer.

Up to 30 more cats are expected to be surrendered to Kitsap Humane Society in the next ten days.  Bremerton ordinance dictates that residents own no more than four animals. Kitsap Humane Society (KHS) is asking the community for help in adopting the cats as soon as possible.  In mid-February, the Bremerton Police Department received an anonymous complaint about many cats housed in a camping trailer.

KARE made multiple efforts to contact the owners, and on March 1, with the owners’ compliance, officers rescued the 46 cats from the trailer, with another 30 cats estimated to remain. KARE could not take all of the 70-plus cats at once because of capacity limits at the KHS shelter.

The owners must deliver the remaining cats to KHS or comply with KARE requirements to rehome them within two weeks or be served with citations regarding the infractions being committed. KHS spayed or neutered all of the cats eight weeks or older. The younger kittens will be spayed/neutered after they reach eight weeks.

Dr. Jen Stonequist, director of shelter medicine at KHS, examined the cats.

“Most of the cats are in relatively good condition and sociable," he said. "Some had minor, medical issues which are being addressed.”  Because of the large volume of cats rescued in this case, KHS will be using its Foster Families program to provide temporary homes for the cats, but they are also seeking people to adopt them. More information can be found on these rescued cats/kittens at kitsap-humane.org/availablepets.

Kitsap Humane Society is a non-profit charitable organization that has been caring for animals in need since 1908. KHS’ vision is that every adoptable companion animal has a home.  The staff and volunteers work toward this goal seven days a week through the immediate care and sheltering of thousands of companion animals that are homeless, lost, ill and in need of an advocate.
