MLK event slated for Fairgrounds
July 4, 2008 · Updated 11:40 AM
Kitsap County will commemorate Martin Luther Kings legacy on Monday with a celebration to be attended by the Board of Commissioners and other local dignitaries.
The event is cosponsored by Kitsap County, the city of Bremerton and the Ebenezer AME Church in Bremerton.
The keynote speaker will be Rev. Dennis Payne of that church.
These events are important because they give future generations an opportunity to gain insight about where Dr. King stood, said Teresa McDermott, the scheduled master of ceremonies.
This will be the eleventh annual local celebration of the holiday. The official commemoration of the date was signed into law in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan.
The theme of this years commemoration is to be Remembering the Past, Participating in our Present and Changing the Future. This ties into the 50th anniversary of the Alabama bus boycott in 1955.
This is a reminder of our past that will help us plan for our future, McDermott said.
