By RACHEL BRANT
The 28-year-old Bremerton woman hit by a car on Wheaton Way Sunday night died Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Irene Cortez, of Bremerton, and her 3-year-old son were walking southbound on the sidewalk along Wheaton Way near Hollis Road shortly after 7 p.m. Sept. 7 when they were struck by a SUV driven by a 24-year-old Bremerton woman, according to Bremerton Police Lt. Pete Fisher. The suspect driver's vehicle went onto the sidewalk, striking both Cortez and the boy. Cortez was airlifted to Harborview in critical condition, Fisher said. The King County Medical Examiner's Office said she died Tuesday of multiple injuries including pelvic and spinal injuries as well as trauma to the head and torso. The medical examiner's office ruled the death as accidental. The 3-year-old boy was transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton following Sunday's incident and has since been released, according to Fisher. Wheaton Way was closed for more than two hours Sunday night. The Bremerton Police Department continues to investigate the incident and anyone with information is asked to call the police department at (360) 473-5218.
