West Sound Safety & Health Expo begins Tuesday
Expo is free and open
to the public.
More than 4,000 people descended upon downtown Bremerton for the first-ever West Sound Safety & Health Expo last year.
“We’re hoping that there will be more people this year,” said Paul Lucas, city of Bremerton safety officer.
The second annual West Sound Safety & Health Expo is 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19 at the Kitsap Conference Center and Bremerton Boardwalk. It is free to the public.
The city of Bremerton and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility are hosting the event and Lucas said it’s a great partnership.
“It’s a very, very good joint venture between the city and the shipyard,” he said. “They’ve really got a super team of safety professionals down there.”
PSNS & IMF has hosted a safety and health expo inside the shipyard gates for years, but they contacted the city last year about the pair putting on a public event in downtown Bremerton, according to Lucas.
He said last year’s attendees were mostly shipyard and city employees, but organizers hope to get a larger, more diverse crowd at this year’s event.
Approximately 85 exhibitors will set up at the two-day West Sound Safety & Health Expo. Exhibitors will be both inside and outside the Kitsap Conference Center at Bremerton Harborside. Some organizations will give one-hour presentations on a variety of topics throughout the event.
“There’s a lot of information on home safety and recreational safety,” Lucas said. “There’s a lot of things there where people can use them on the job and at home.”
Aside from exhibitors and some presentations, the Kitsap chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is scheduled to put on a mock car crash at the West Sound Safety & Health Expo.
The expo also features a Kids Zone dedicated to children’s safety and health topics. Lucas said organizers hope parents will bring their children to the event to teach them the importance of staying healthy and safe.
