Raise the Roofs

Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County has hosted Raise the Roofs for six years and the organization decided to change it up a bit for event No. 7.

This year’s fundraiser includes an online auction and Habitat development associate and Raise the Roofs coordinator Sheila Marie said Habitat hopes it’ll draw more people to the event.

“Hopefully it’ll broaden the base a little bit, get the word out farther,” she said.

Marie said the Rotary Club of Poulsbo-North Kitsap has done a successful online auction, so Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County decided to give it a shot too.

The online auction, located at kitsaphabitat.cmarket.com, has a variety of items up for bid including local artwork and fly fishing supplies. Items to be auctioned off at Raise the Roofs in September also are on display on the Web site.

Marie said Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County hopes to raise $500-$1,000 from the online auction.

“That doesn’t sound like a lot, but the first year is usually the lightest year as far as returns,” she said.

Raise the Roofs typically rakes in $40,000-$45,000 each year, making it Habitat’s biggest fundraiser.

Marie said it costs $66,000 to build a Habitat home and the organization always strives to raise enough money to build one house at Raise the Roofs.

“We’re grateful to get whatever we get,” she said.

The online auction is open until Sept. 10.

Raise the Roofs is slated for 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 at Comfort Inn and Suites in Bremerton. The event includes dinner, a live auction and dessert auction.

Event tickets are $35 per person. To purchase tickets, call Marie at (360) 550-2452 or e-mail da@kitsaphabitat.org.
