Bremerton police were called to View Ridge Elementary school Friday morning after reports of school staff members detaining a man with a gun.

When officers arrived, they discovered the person being held down by a male staff member was a young boy.

Police found a gas-operated BB gun filled with 13 BBs inside a Spider Man backpack laying near the boy's feet. The boy claimed another boy gave him the gun and told him to take it to school, according to police reports.

School employees learned about the boy's gun after students reported it to staff members on playground duty. Principal Sandra Gessner-Crabtree told police when she tried to talk to the boy, he ran away.

When the boy's mother came to school, she said the BB gun likely came from her son-in-law, who was keeping some of his belongings at her house. She also said her son takes several medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and a bipolar disorder.

Police took him to the Kitsap County Youth Service Center.
