June 23, 2010 · Updated 4:57 PM
A 76-year-old Bremerton woman was killed in a head-on collision in Gorst Wednesday morning after she drove into the wrong lane of traffic.
At about 9:38 a.m., the woman drove north into southbound traffic, colliding with a pickup truck that spun and hit a third vehicle near West Belfair Valley Road on State Highway 3, according to the Washington State Patrol. The woman died on the scene. The resulting road block caused an eight-mile backup in the southbound lanes, stretching as far as Chico, according to a Department of Transportation statement. The roadway was cleared by about noon.
The pickup truck driver, a 49-year-old Bremerton man, was taken to Harrison Medical Center for head and arm injuries. The driver of the third vehicle, a 58-year-old Poulsbo man, was treated for glass cuts and released at the scene.
