It’s not hard to imagine some of the sailors aboard the USS Nimitz grumbling about their new home.

And they deserve some sympathy. Here in Kitsap, we’ve already had one sub-freezing snow storm while the weather in San Diego is mostly sunny and delightfully pleasant.

But climate isn’t everything. And when you take out the sun — sweet, warm, life-giving sun — Kitsap can give Southern California a run for its money, especially when one considers quality of life.

But like California, Western Washington in general and Kitsap specific, is a melting pot of people from different parts of the country, and world, representing many points of view.

We also have a stunningly green landscape, even in the winter. We are close to the ocean, close to the mountains. For those who enjoy fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing, we are a world-class destination.

We have bears and coyotes, but we are also just a ferry ride from downtown Seattle.

And above all else, we are a community that looks out for each other.

Without a doubt, the crew of the Nimitz will find a warm welcome.

Here’s to hoping they don’t hold their breath for warm weather.
