The South Kitsap Help Line is in desparate need this week and the community can help. According to a press release that was mass e-mailed on Thursday afternoon, there was a leak in a freon tube in the Help Line freezers and the meat was not being kept at the proper temperature.

“As a result the non-profit food bank has lost all of the holiday turkeys and hams intended to feed 800 families on Monday (Dec. 22),” the release states.

In holiday season, we need to not only be thankful for what we have, but be mindful of those who do not have enough. Nothing celebrates the holidays — or humanity — like lending a helping hand.

It is important during the holidays that no family is left behind. For this reason, if you are able to give, please do so. The food bank has extended its receiving hours from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. until it receives enough turkeys to meet the demand. The food bank is located at 1351 Bay St. in Port Orchard. The phone number is (360) 876-4089.

But generosity is not limited to the South Kitsap Help Line; there are dozens of other charitable organizations that can use a hand.

In addition to organizations, there also are hundreds of military families in the area who have loved ones deployed over and under the seas this holiday season. They too could use a helping hand.

Take a couple of hours out of an evening and help them decorate their home; offer to babysit so a tired parent can get a break or finish up some Christmas shopping.

At the very least, if you know someone who is missing a loved one this holiday season, pick up the phone and thank them for their sacrifice.

The holidays are all about giving, not getting. Let us celebrate.
