Let’s not get Twitter crazy

It may still be circulating through the rumor mill, but there are published reports that drivers can have yet one more distraction made available to them through another new-age technology.
Twitter addicts can rejoice because soon they can Tweet about the car accident they just caused as they communicate via their OnStar system. Yes, the Twitter craze has even reached the motor vehicle industry.
While this new capability has yet to go live, you can bet it’s coming. It’s inevitable. While some are rejoicing from the rooftops, others are cringing as they can already foresee Twitter’s world domination. Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves by going that far, but really, leave the Twittering to the desktop computer. It belongs on the desk or on a laptop, not in the car.
As it is, drivers have enough handheld devices and gadgets to keep their eyes off the road whether it be texting, BlackBerries or talking on and, yes, even Twittering directly from, their cell phones. Just as cell phones have hands-free devices, this proposed OnStar/Twitter collaboration will work in much the same way. OnStar will submit and retrieve Tweets from drivers’ Twitter accounts. Voice-to-text conversion as technologically advanced as it is, however, is still a distraction whether or not both of the driver’s hands are still on the wheel. While talking to OnStar and with a Bluetooth in one ear so as not to miss that important phone call, drivers will be doing everything except what they should be doing — driving. Whether it’s talking on a hands-free set or Twittering through OnStar, it’s nothing but an unnecessary diversion.
We live in a technological-savvy era, but there comes a point when the need for effortless convenience begins to supersede common sense.
