Semancik Foundation awards two continuing education scholarships

The Semancik Foundation will present two continuing education scholarships at the 5th Quarter awards luncheon at the seventh annual Semancik Memorial/Bremerton Alumni Golf Tournament Sept. 12 at Rolling Hills in Bremerton.

Jennifer Smalley, a sophomore at Eastern Oregon University, will receive the $2,000 Al Colvin Scholarship, while Chris Martindale, a sophomore at Central Washington University, will receive the Bremerton High School Class of 1953 $1,000 award. Both Smalley and Martindale are BHS grads.

“I hope to have all the people from my hometown see me as a hard worker, determined to succeed and very involved in the community,” Smalley said. “I try to make my family and my community very proud of me in everything I do.”

The Semancik Foundation awarded its first continuing education scholarship in 2008 in hopes of financially boosting area students through college.

“They are designed as an incentive to help one of our former Semancik scholarship recipients keep pursuing what can sometimes seem an elusive degree,” said founder Lane Dowell. “The cost of higher education can be quite prohibitive in today’s world.”

The Semancik Foundation was created in 2000 in the name of legendary coach Chuck Semancik. It is a nonprofit organization.

“Jennifer and Chris are making solid progress in school and have a plan for the future,” Dowell added. “Both very much want to make their communities proud of them and better by giving back.”
